NOVELS BY GUY SHURMER
Two of the following novels are awaiting publication, one is in draft form,
and one is an early work which is probably unpublishable as it now stands.
A synopsis and sample chapters of each work are available here.
ANCIENT BETRAYALS
Historical fiction set in 1st Century AD Palestine.
The novel tells the story of a street-urchin who becomes a courier between a growing politico-religious movement in the Galilee and its supporters in Jerusalem.
The story of the uprising and the Crucifixion is seen through his eyes.
The character is based on the individual known as the "Beloved Disciple" who features in the Gospel of St John.
INVENTING EMILY
Contemporary fiction set on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall.
This novel is in draft form and the synopsis and sample chapters are subject to change.
CRASHING OUT
Contemporary fiction. Alternative title: THE MORNING ROOM
Tony Richardson is the head of software development for the UK arm of a major US corporation.
He is in his late middle-age and beset with problems.
But nothing ever keeps the ebullient Tony down for long.
Tony goes at everything like a bull at a gate, a whirlwind of energy.
He solves his work problems, gets the better of his slimy boss, and manipulates his ex-wife into an advantageous financial agreement.
But it is a desperate journey, and in the process we discover the secret that Tony has lived with all his life.
WICKED!
A contemporary black comedy.
General Southgate of the US Marines, now close to retirement,
is much troubled by certain military actions he took in the past.
He has set up a private foundation for the investigation of evil -
is it merely a philosophical concept? Or a real force?
However the people the General has hired to run his research establishment are out for what they can get
and cover up their inadequacies at research with bizarre experiments.
Things come to a head when grisly events are discovered to have taken place in the foundation's grounds.
Mr Beelzebub, a large bird-eating spider,
appears when a "spider room" is created as one of the dubious experiments.
Alec Metcalf, the foundation's Head of Research, grows rather fond of Mr Beelzebub and takes Mr Beelzebub under his personal charge.
By night Mr Beelzebub sleeps in Alec's wastepaper basket,
and during the day he is carried around in the pocket of Alec's old tweed jacket.
But Mr Beelzebub is growing apace and soon becomes far too large for Alec's pocket.
Chapter 2 has not yet been loaded.
FLYING FORBIDDEN FLAGS
A thriller.
This novel is set in the period immediately following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It was actively considered by a major publishing group, but the public had begun to lose interest in cold-war thrillers and it was eventually declined.
It is included here for interest only.
Transworld: "...a good example of the genre..."
